The 'Save the Reservoirs' plaque at the Stoke Newington West Reservoir Centre. Too small and out of sight IMO

The West Reservoir Centre sure has changed since it was an operational filtration plant. This Wednesday it'll host the 6th Stoke Newington History Talks event. Can't wait!
@highamnews @_pasttense_ @drewerydyke Is the West Reservoir fed from the Eastern one?

The New River filtration plant in the West Reservoir in Green Lanes. Built in 1936. It’s now the West Reservoir Centre: water sports, cafe and events venue. There were two small ponds outside originally. The original wings were pulled down and new ones were built instead. The West Reservoir was originally constructed in 1833 as part of London’s efforts to secure a reliable supply of clean water for its rapidly growing population. It formed a crucial component of the New River scheme, a 17th-century engineering project designed to bring fresh water from Hertfordshire to the capital. By the 19th and early 20th centuries, the need for water purification had become urgent due to population growth and public health crises, such as cholera outbreaks. The filtration plant, added in 1936, was part of a broader movement to improve water quality through modern treatment methods, ensuring that the water supplied to Londoners was safe to drink. The filtration plant’s purpose was to clean and store water from the New River before it was distributed to homes and businesses across London. The process involved filtering out dirt and impurities to make the water safe for consumption.
