@ghostsigns @VictorianLondon I always wondered about this quite unique street sign. Haven't seen anything similar in SN or elsewhere. You?

@VictorianLondon @ghostsigns around Clapton there are still a few old NE post code street signs. Always a joy spotting them.
@KailaFleming I'm surprised not even a single pre-1937 Church Street sign has survived (as far as I can tell). They were very thorough!
Unusual street sign given Church St was renamed SN Church St in 1937 but SN became part of Hackney Borough in 1965
A collection of (mostly) old Stoke Newington street signs from when Stoke Newington was a London Borough (1900-1965) flickr.com/photos/1215623…
@VictorianLondon great photos. Gotta love the NE street sign.
@ghostsigns @VictorianLondon old North-East street sign
@VictorianLondon @ghostsigns NE street sign opposite Lea River. Hard to believe it's been there since at least 1865.
@VictorianLondon @ghostsigns I've only seen a couple of pre-1917 N street signs in Stoke Newington. Like Manse Rd.
@VictorianLondon @ghostsigns spotted this vintage North-East street sign today. Has it really been there since 1866?
Not Stoke Newington but still great work by @VictorianLondon mapping old NE postcode street signs (1858-66) google.com/maps/d/edit?mi…

Anyone aware of pre-1917 N street sign in Stoke Newingtin like this? flickr.com/photos/1215623… East of High St was Hackney so doesn’t count
@VictorianLondon As the High St was the border line with Hackney I’m being pedantic and not including it as Stoke Newington street sign.

@VictorianLondon @ghostsigns @VincentStops @SDS_uk I hope for that you are given a street sign of choice to take home with you. I'm in.
@VictorianLondon interesting. Given no. of Georgian houses on the south side shame there aren't any more old Church St street signs
@VincentStops @VictorianLondon The old one is one of few pre-1917 (before the numeric subdivision of postal areas) street signs around
@Map_Modernity @VictorianLondon @ghostsigns Any evidence to link existing NE street signs with residents’ protest? Quite a few survived.
@Map_Modernity @VictorianLondon @ghostsigns Any idea if all NE street signs are pre-1867 or are some more recent?
RT @Map_Modernity: @HistoryOfStokey @VictorianLondon @ghostsigns it's my understanding that many of the NE street signs are post-1867
@ghostsigns @VictorianLondon @Map_Modernity Utterly baffled by this ‘Albion Rd N.E.’ street sign.
Old Stoke Newington Borough (1900-1965) street signs RT “@cliSSoldXX1: pic.x.com/cXXuvKzxuk”
Pre-1965 Stoke Newington Borough street signs can still be seen across what is now a district in Hackney.
This pre-1917 Garnham Street sign with N postcode and unusual design is one of the oldest street signs in SN
@ghostsigns @VictorianLondon btw, are you aware of any other N street sign apart from Garnham St within old SN borough boundaries?
1861 map showing Shakspeare Road spelled without an E unlike faded street sign posted earlier. Hmmmm…
@highamnews Indeed. Interesting that who ever painted the street sign opted for a different spelling than one shown in all the maps.
@LynRennick @lucyhharrison @nookshop_uk @ArchivesHackney As I pointed out, ghost street sign has ShakEspeare so clearly not straightforward
@LynRennick @lucyhharrison @nookshop_uk @ArchivesHackney Quite a few NE street signs still around 150 years after NE postcode was abolished
Looks authentic. Pre-1917 street sign of the Hackney side of the High St. The west side was in Stoke Newington.
What a beauty. Note also the old street sign with the pre-1917 N postcode x.com/eokenesi/statu…

One of a handful of Stoke Newington Borough street signs that are still around. The borough was abolished and absorbed into Hackney in 1965.
SN Borough street signs. Only a handful remain today. The Borough was absorbed into Hackney in 1965. (Photos by Tom Uprichard)

@realnickperry @ghostsigns spotted this plaque (bottom right) in Gloucester Drive/Green Lanes. Seems unusual for a street sign, though position would suggest it was. What do you think?
@ghostsigns It was a good opportunity to hunt for old street signs in residential streets I’ve never visited (mainly N4), and searching for an N postcode street sign in the boundaries of the former borough. None found :-( Quite a few bootscrapers though;)
@TheShakeyN16 @__roop__ The original spelling is still visible in a faded street sign opposite the pub on the corner of Allen Road

Just spotted a faded ‘Gordon Road’ street sign. The street was renamed Beatty Road in 1937. Quite a few SN streets were renamed in the early 20th century.
Ghost street sign in Milton Grove, showing it was originally called Milton Road. Quite a few streets in Stoke Newington were renamed over the years, often to avoid confusion with other London streets with the same name. Traces of an older sign just about visible underneath.
When Church Street was renamed Stoke Newington Church Street in 1937 it became the longest street name in London. In fact, it was so long they had to use two separate street signs to fit the name as I noticed a few days ago.
@urbanpastoral @citymuso The London NE street sign survey was organised by @ghostsigns @realnickperry and @VictorianLondon
Spotted today this faded street sign at 217 Stoke Newington High Street. Amazing how many times I’ve walked pass it but only noticed it today for the first time. I need to take a proper close-up photo (@ghostsigns @realnickperry)
Two different versions of the street sign at 217 Stoke Newington High St are visible in these photos. The street was named simply ‘High Street’ until 1937 when it was renamed ‘Stoke Newington High Street’ to avoid confusion with all the other high streets across London.
@ghostsigns @realnickperry I suspect it’s from the same period as these ones x.com/HistoryOfStoke… x.com/HistoryOfStoke… which had the name of the parish below the street name. As such, it’s unique and the only surviving ‘Stoke Newington’ painted street sign I’m aware of.
@ghostsigns @alistairhall @realnickperry @VictorianLondon As far as rarity goes when it comes to local street signs, this is my favourite! x.com/HistoryOfStoke…
@alistairhall @ghostsigns Thanks. Any idea when painted street signs where replaced with nameplates or did they ‘co-exist’ durnig the 19th century?
RT @urbanpastoral: Former borough of Stoke Newington street name sign on Green Lanes #LondonHistory
@urbanpastoral Oh wow! I wasn’t aware of it. I’m currently surveying all these SN Borough street signs so this is very much appreciated! :)
Thanks @urbanpastoral for pointing out a vintage Stoke Newington Borough street sign in Green Lanes I wasn’t aware of. What makes this one special is it’s actually slightly north of the northern boundary which was Hermitage Road 10min walk north of Manor House Tube station.
I estimate there are no more than 20 such street signs still around. A fading (and disappearing) remnant of Stoke Newington’s past as an indepedent Metropolitan Borough. Sadly, in the last few years some of these old signs were removed/possibly stolen. x.com/HistoryOfStoke…
This Stoke Newington Borough Prince George Road street sign (which is in fact made of two sepsrate pieces), disappeared a few years ago. I wonder if the council removes such old signs, that are in poor state. Does anyone know?
I was sent this message from someone who contacted in 2015 the Signs Services at Hackneyhomes.org.uk regarding old SN Borough street signs: "Unfortunately, we don't have any signs and any we do replace have to be destroyed.” :( @hackneycouncil x.com/HistoryOfStoke…

'Borough of Stoke Newington' street sign in Palatine Road. One of several that are still around and serve as a remnant of SN's past as an independent municipal entity. Most are in a poor state. I'm currently carrying out a photo-survey of these and other old street signs.
Here's my digital restoration of the vintage 'Borough of Stoke Newington' street sign in Belgrade Road
As far as I'm aware, there are only 3 street signs in Stoke Newington in this style. Two in Green Lanes and one in Albion Road.

Has anyone seen this ‘comma style’ street sign anywhere else outside Stoke Newington? x.com/HistoryOfStoke…
Rare 'Borough of Stoke Newington' street signs in Hermitage Road N4 and Green Lanes N4 north of Manor House opposite Finsbury Park. Hermitage Road was the northern boundary of the old parish and later the borough. The borough name was included in street signs along its boundaries
As far as I'm aware, today there are only seven such 'punctuated street signs' in Stoke Newington (that do not include 'Borough of Stoke Newington'). I estimate they date back to the 1920s as numeric subdivision of postcodes was introduced in 1917.
This street sign in Allerton Road is unique in its design in Stoke Newington. Coincidently, its in the only street in Stoke Newington (as far as I'm aware) where each side is numbered consecutively.
They sure don't make street signs to last like they used to!
@ghostsigns spotted this unusual street sign today in Springdale Road. It's the same style as the 'punctuated' ones but is postcode-less.
@alistairhall someone suggested to me that these street signs may have been produced locally by Stoke Newington Council all those years ago, which means this particular design and format could be unique to Stoke Newington. Keen to hear your thoughts. Thanks.
Old street signs around London are remnants of long-gone Metropolitan Boroughs like Finsbury, St Pancars, Holborn and Shoreditch. Old parishes that became small, almost village-like Metropolitan Boroughs in 1900. x.com/HistoryOfStoke…

@ZachVR @mayorofhackney @hackneycouncil They’ll also last much longer than the cheap-looking ‘sticker’ street signs that are quite common now in Stoke Newington.
Two of the 16 surviving 'Borough of Stoke Newington' street signs that can be seen along or in close proximity to the boundaries of the former metropolitan borough. Several such vintage street signs were removed/stolen in recent years. I have now photographed all 16.
Here are four 'Borough of Stoke Newington' street signs that have been removed/stolen in recent years.
A painted 'ghost' street sign at Beatty Road/Gunstor Road reveals Beatty Road was originally named Gordon Road. Street were renamed over the years for various reasons, primarily to avoid confusion with others in London with the same name. Wholesale renaming took place in 1937.
An unusual and rare street sign on the corner of SN High St and Dynevor Rd. It looks like the original writing included the pre-1917 'N' postcode and that the sign was repainted later with the 'new' N16 postcode. Recent building work resulted in the crudely drawn outline.
@GE0RGYGIRL I’m not too optimistic that the people in the concil tasked with replacing ‘old’ street signs will work with the Hackney Museum to ensure they are preserved once removed. I’ll ask though.
@GE0RGYGIRL There used to be on at 187 High St. They were effectively boundary markers. Still quite a few pre-1965 ‘Borough of Hackney’ street signs along the east side of Stoke Newington High St and Stoke Newington Road.
Anyone in Manor House tomorrow? would love to know if this vintage ‘Borough of Stoke Newington’ Green Lanes street sign is still there. Seen here in 2017 as captured on Google StreetView. Thanks!
Thanks to Google Street View’s Time Machine feature I was able to see when this vintage ‘Borough of Stoke Newington’ street sign in SN Road was repainted and restored in 2014. It’s great someone took the time and effort to bring it back to life.
Another example courtesy of Google Street View’s Time Machine showing how a vintage ‘Borough of Stoke Newington’ street sign, this time in Blackstock Road, was brought back to life.
Old street sign in Allerton Road, Stoke Newington. This street sign design is unique in the area. There's no other like it in Stoke Newington.
My digital restoration of a rare street sign in Stoke Newington High St/Dynevor Rd, which includes the pre-1917 'N' postcode. The sign was clearly repainted at some point with the updated N16 postcode. There are only 2 surviving 'N' street signs in the former borough of SN.
Here's my photo-survey of the 17 surviving 'Borough of Stoke Newington' street signs, which are dotted along the boundaries of the former Metropolitan Borough of Stoke Newington. Others were removed/stolen in recent years. View all individual photos here: flickr.com/photos/snhisto……

Made to last. A pre-1917 street sign with ‘N’ postcode near Bethune Road; the northeastern border between the former Metropolitan Boroughs of Stoke Newington and Hackney. Stoke Newington Parish, and later borough reached as far north as Hermitage Road, Eade Road and Amhurst Park.
Hot from the press: An article in the @hackneygazette by @samgelder about my recent survey of the 17 surviving ‘Borough of Stoke Newington’ street signs hackneygazette.co.uk/news/heritage/…
Remnants of the South Hornsey Local Board, which governed Brownswood Park and exclaves within Stoke Newington north of Newington Green can be seen in ‘ghost’ street signs like this one in Wilberforce Rd, N4. Most of the South Hornsey area was absorbed into SN Borough in 1900.
Here's the print version of the article in last weekend's Hackney Gazette about my photo-survey of old 'Borough of Stoke Newington' street signs. Online version available here: hackneygazette.co.uk/news/heritage/… https://t.co/piqqzGuXJu
@realnickperry @Map_Modernity @lawrenceofthe @MrTimDunn @ghostsigns @VictorianLondon We can do a joint talk about old street signs including non-NE ones that are actually IN Stoke Newington!;)
Barclays Bank, 40-41 Newington Green, Stoke Newington (Source: archive.barclays.com). Note the old Stoke Newington Borough boundary plaque below the 'Newington Green' street sign. It was sadly removed a few years ago. https://t.co/SnQmAagHRk
@timmysmells That one is of a group of a small group street signs that include ‘Borough of Stoke Newington’. The group of 8 I referred to are from the same period but were located within the borough, they are the version without ‘Borough of Stoke Newington’.
Just spotted a an old ‘Nevill Road’ street sign at 81 Nevill Road. So easy to miss! Every time I think I’ve seen and uncovered all of these little hidden bits I tell myself there are more out there just waiting to be discovered.
Bentley Road in neighbouring Dalston, while small, offers a number of history gems: 1. What I think is a fire insurance mark - There are none in SN as far as I know 2. Street sign with pre-1917 N postcode - Only two in SN 3. Parish boundary markers - There are a few in SN
A nearly invisible ‘Stoke Newington Borough’ street sign in Green Lanes/Seven Sisters Rd. Only 17 such street signs, which were dotted along the borders of the former Metropolitan Borough, are still in place. I estimate this style was introduced in the 1930s.
@wakefieldsarah I only have this photo from 1910. No other info about the road I’m afraid. Still baffled by the the unusual numbering. Only two streets in SN are numbered consecutively. It also a unique street sign.
Amazed to see this pre-1965 enamel street sign in Oakford Rd, NW5 looking in such mint condition. Also a pre-1917 ‘tile sign’ in the same street in great condition. Most 19th century SN street aigns weren’t durable, only a few survived compared to Islington, Hackney and Haringey
The fact the signs are in a quiet residential street clearly help, as those in main road get dirtier. Interesting to see that while the Borough of Stoke Newington only placed street signs with the borough’s name along its boundaries, other boroughs had them in inner streets too.…
