@aishimas4 seems like the Cazenove Club closed down years ago. Nice to see the space used. The John Brown shop sign is covered yet again.

@Delightful_Dem Yes. I kept an eye on the work that was going on there as it uncovered an old shop sign, which has now been covered again.
The faded sign of the firebombed Barclays Bank turned Stoke Newington Bookshop is still visible flickr.com/photos/6776560…
@realnickperry nice touch keeping the old shop sign that was revealed during the renovation
Can anyone make out the rest of the shop sign still slightly visible? "Wholesale and retail. Builder and merchant.."

A few of the old Stoke Newington shop signs that have been revealed in recent years. Some have been covered again. Some removed.
@muddybootsfoods @better_letters @realnickperry @ghostsigns @HackneySociety Shop signs can be a mysterious thing :) Any plans for the shop timeline?
@ktchnprvsns any plans to remove the current shop sign board? Would be great if an older one is hidden underneath
Great to hear that the old shop sign that was revealed at 117 Stoke Newington Church St won’t be removed and will be covered with a new sign. x.com/historyofstoke…

@LynRennick @ghostsigns @realnickperry If that’s the case, then it’s the only such surviving painted sign in that style I’ve seen and it’ll be consistent with similar painted street signs in south SN that have South Hornsey below the street name.
T. J. Electrics, 174 Stoke Newington Church Street. Opened in 1975. 3rd oldest shop in Church St. Oldest shop sign in the street.
‘Church St Electronics’ ‘ghost’ clock shop sign at 44 Stoke Newington Church St. It was there in the 90s.

[THREAD] Stoke Newington old shop sign reveals of recent years (@_lillymarques @ghostsigns @HackneySociety)
@ghostsigns The current shop sign from 1975 is the oldest in Stoke Newington Church St by the way, which makes it almost as historically significant as whatever older sign is underneath
@TGSRPM TJ Electrics opened in 1972 :) oldest shop sign in Church St and most probably in Stoke Newington!
Two of the oldest shop signs in the area are in Brooke Road near Stoke Newington High St. You can see an earlier “Fruit and Vegetables” under “Mirror TV”. I’m guessing 1960s-70s. Any info @ghostsigns?
@pkl1234 @ghostsigns Thanks. There’s a faded remnant of a fruit and veg shop sign, which be from the 1950s when the shop was there unless it’s newer than that which is always a possibility.

@ghostsigns New commercial tenants moving into 4 properties that closed recently in Church Street (as is the case every year, especially around this time), so I hope we’ll get at least one shop sign reveal!
Shop sign reveal spotted from a bus just now at 25 Stoke Newington Road! (@ghostsigns @realnickperry)
Details about the origin of the 25 Stoke Newington Road shop sign reveal from this morning x.com/richardyoung71…
It’s exciting to see an old shop sign revealed because apart from catching a glimpse of the shop’s history, you never know if it’s going to remain or be gone within minutes, hours or days. The old Surgery sign at 25 Stoke Newington Rd I spotted this morning is already gone now.
@ghostsigns @TypeTasting @richardardagh Busy week for shop sign reveal enthusiasts! x.com/HistoryOfStoke…
Peter Marshall’s colourful photos of London in the 80s are mesmerising. Hundreds of photos of shops, beautiful shop signs, various buildings creating a captivating snapshot of the city. There are also a few great photos of Stoke Newington. Here -> flickr.com/photos/peterma…
The 1950s shop sign at 156 Stoke Newington Church St that was revealed yesterday is being covered yet again many years after Rose May Ripley’s toy shop closed. She died in 1987 but the sign that once adorned her shop lives on.
Close-ups I took with a camera of the revealed 1950s ghost sign at 156 Stoke Newington Church St, which make you appreciate the artistry of hand painted sign writing. (@ghostsigns @TypeTasting)
The close-ups also show the severe decay of the sign with the name of the proprietor, R M Ripley (Rose May Ripley), barely visible. It's such a shame as it would have been a vibrant, colourful toy shop sign when the shop was trading in the early 1950s.
@conundrum_112 Certain businesses like this one that’s opening tomorrow at 156 SN Church St have hand-painted shop signs. @ghostsigns can comment on any broader trend for shop sign writing.
Blakey, Morris & Co., Wallpaper merchants traded at 11 Stoke Newington Church Street in the 1960s-1970s, where Mind charity shop is today. The considerable shop sign can be seen in this photo from 1977. (@ghostsigns)

T. J. Electrics, 174 Stoke Newington Church Street. Opened in 1975. 3rd oldest shop in Church St after Gino’s barbershop (1965) and KAC (1951). It has the oldest shop sign in the Church Street, which hasn’t changed since the shop opened 48 years ago.

Cynthia Grandfield alerted me to this shop sign reveal at 110 Green Lanes today. My guess is it dates from the 1960s.

Does anyone remember what this former shop at 12 Nevill Road, on the corner of Brighton Road, used to be before it was converted into a flat? The paint on the shop sign continues to flake off, revealing a third letter in addition to the two that were visible a few months ago. What’s visible now is ‘ARO,’ with one letter before that, I think. The shop closed in the late 1990s.

An Instagram follower, Alice Knowles, alerted me to the unveiling of an old shop sign at 7a Cazenove Road. It’s actually two signs for two separate businesses: one for Mandoza & Co. Estate Agents and the other for an electrical services business. The Mandoza & Co. letter dates from 1928, and the advert is from 1931.

Good news! The owner has confirmed that they intend to keep the shop sign. The sign was revealed today in 28 Allen Road during renovation work on the former shop, which was converted into a residential property years ago. May Payne was registered to vote there from 1961 to 1965, so the sign dates from around that time (research courtesy of Richard Young).
An old, now-faded ‘Bill Stickers Will Be Prosecuted’ painted sign on 135 Stoke Newington Road, at the corner of Beatty Road (and yes, we all know Bill Stickers is innocent).

I was just alerted to the partial reveal of an old shop sign at 124 Stoke Newington High Street. It has been A & B Glassworks since around 1980, so this could either be an older sign from that business or from a business that predates it.

Absolutely incredible! Three ghost shop signs were revealed today at T. J. Electrics at 174 Stoke Newington Church Street. I’ve always assumed the sign that’s been there for many years dated to 1972 when the shop opened, however an older T. J. Electrics was uncovered underneath it. It’s amazing to see one old sign revealed but in this case two more were there, dating to the 1960s when the shop was Ellen, Ladies’ Outfitter and Terry Joice, Ladies’ Outfitter before that. The shop is currently being renovated and will reopen as a greengrocer. Photos courtesy of Know & Love, next door at number 176.

The 1972 T. J. Electrics shop sign that was uncovered yesterday, along with two older signs, at 174 Church St, when the existing sign was removed as part of the renovation of the shop into a greengrocer, has been cleaned. Close inspection of its details, with visible brush strokes, allows one to appreciate the craftsmanship that goes into such hand-painted signs. I rescued the sign yesterday as it was about to be discarded, and will keep it. 1/3

Good news! Fellow local historian Tony Rich saved the 1950s “Netta” shop sign today, which was uncovered at 165 Stoke Newington Church Street on 9 September. The thick glass sign was unfortunately broken when the modern sign attached to it was removed, but the two large surviving pieces that would otherwise have been discarded are now in safe hands. The older “Netta” will remain, covered by a new shop sign for Two Wheels Good. It may reappear again years from now. The signs date back to when the shop was Anetta Davey’s knitting wool shop, which she later changed into a drapery in the 1950s.
