RT @hellsgrannie: I was part of Save the Reservoirs campaign in 90s which means we still have them and the castle today. :) https://t.co/TU…

The 'Save the Reservoirs' plaque at the Stoke Newington West Reservoir Centre. Too small and out of sight IMO
The very small plaque commemorating the very important 'Save the Reservoirs' campaign. A shame it's the only mention as far as I'm aware
RT @PeterMassini: @clissoldpeople @HistoryOfStokey I was in 'Save the Reservoirs'. An accessible nature reserve, not plaques, best testamen…
The Stoke Newington ‘Save the Reservoirs’ campaign in the late 1980s and early 1990s saved the reservoirs from development.
Monica Blake, one of the ‘Save the reservoirs’ campaigners will talk about the campaign on the 30th. Can’t wait! eventbrite.com/e/stoke-newing… x.com/HistoryOfStoke…

@_pasttense_ @highamnews Thanks. Came across an interesting timeline of the new river that was prepared as part of the “Save the Reservoirs” campaign and it says the river terminated at the reservoirs from 1946 hence any section further down was ‘ornamental’.
The West Reservoir. The two Stoke Newington Reservoirs were constructed in 1833 to purify the New River water and to act as a water reserve. A local campaign ‘Save the Reservoirs’ was launched in the mid 1980s when the Reservoirs came under threat of development.
The East Reservoir. The 2 Stoke Newington Reservoirs were constructed in 1833 to purify the New River water and act as a water reserve. A local campaign ‘Save the Reservoirs’ was launched in the mid 1980s when the Reservoirs came under threat of development once no longer needed…

@Pixel_Press @AtomGalleryN16 I have some great examples from the campaign to save Clissold Park in the 1880s if relevant and also the Save the Reservoirs campaign of the late 1980s-early 1990s
The gas house (built 1833) on the bank of the East Reservoir with the former filtration plant (built 1936) and pumping station (built 1854-6) in the distance next to the West Reservoir. The reservoirs were saved from development thanks to the ‘Save the Reservoirs’ local campaign
The former entrance and railings are all that’s left of the site of the 9 New River filtering beds in Green Lanes. They were part of the extensive New River Waterworks in Stoke Newington. The filtering beds were lost despite a local campaign, which did save the reservoirs.

“In the 1980s Thames Water originally proposed to sell off all three sites in the Green Lanes Waterworks – West and East Reservoirs and the filter beds. They backed down quite early on the East Reservoir and then the Save the Reservoirs campaign started.” (Laurie Elks)
@StanleyJMJ “…having a long history of nonconformity, they’re not ones to give in.” The Save the Reservoirs campaign lasted almost 10 years.
RT @Roger89835988: @HistoryOfStokey Save the Reservoirs Campaign achieved just that; both Reservoirs survive. Thames Water's original plans…

@jaycey_ @WestReservoir @highamnews Any memories of the Save the Reservoirs campaign? Or has it wound down by then?
The Save the Reservoirs campaign in the late 80s-mid 90s was founded to preserve the two reservoirs and nine filter beds in Green Lanes, which were at risk of being drained and built over.
The ‘Save the Reservoirs’ campaign was initiated by a group of local people living in Stoke Newington in response to Thames Water’s plans to sell and develop the site of the two reservoirs and nine filter beds. The filter beds were across the road from the Castle Pumping Station…
The ‘Save the Reservoirs’ campaign was initiated by a group of local people living in Stoke Newington in response to Thames Water’s plans to sell and develop the site of the two reservoirs and nine filter beds. The filter beds were across the road from the Castle Pumping Station. The long campaign lasted from 1986 to 1999 and resulted in the successful retention of the reservoirs. However, the site of the filter beds was redeveloped for housing.
