Sir Thomas Abney (1640-1722) was Lord of the Manor of Stoke Newington, Lord Mayor of the City of London and co-founder of the Bank of England. His Manor House was called Abney House. It stood on Church Street where the cemetery gates are. Built in 1700, it was demolished in 1843

@benmilne @LynRennick As far as I know, Stoke Newington Mayors were often local shopkeepers and as such an integral part of the community. Something that was lost when the borough was absorbed into Hackney in 1965.

@cats_music_cars Unlike Stamford Hill, Stoke Newington used to be an indepednent civic entity with its own Mayor and council. Now both are districts and as such their boundaries are ill-defined and very subjective :)
