@GE0RGYGIRL @TheFoxReformed even if the property was sold under the condition it'll be restored rather than rot? Seems very strange.
@Huriye it is now owned by a couple that bought it in the 1950's and restored it since then. They feature in a film made by the archives.
@Huriye the houses behind the shops towards the roundabout are part of the row as far as I remember, though not as well restored.

@HackneySociety @thevicsoc @AbneyParkN16 Will it ever be restored? such a shame letting it rot. Was told restoration cost is £2.5m.
@HackneyKnits One could argue gentrification restored the area to its late Victorian/early Edwardian middle-class golden age;)

@oldlondonnow Thanks. In 1829 Sir Charles Barry restored St Mary's Old Church in Stoke Newington and added a spire to the old tower.
@richmondie I seriously doubt it I'm afraid. Only 173 Church St by the garden centre was restored and shop front extension was removed.
@richmondie some survived for a bit longer as a school for example or even factory but sadly restoration seems extremely unlikely
@TimWThornton The building was built in 1712 but only the original facade survived a considerable restoration in 1983

Here's my digital restoration of the vintage 'Borough of Stoke Newington' street sign in Belgrade Road
This 'Borough of Stoke Newington' street sign in Blackstock Road N4 was restored a few years ago. Looks great now. Blackstock Road was the western boundary of the borough, which is why I hypothesise the borough name was included to act as a boundary marker.
My digital restoration of a painted street sign in Finsbury Road N4/Mountgrove Road N5. This part of South Hornsey, along with others north of Newington Green were incorporated into the Metropolitan Borough of Stoke Newington when it was formed in 1900.
@Jeanill Yes. Here’s the street back in day. The surviving houses were restored and look very similar now to what they used to look like
An old Stoke Newington Church Street street sign seen here in 2013. It was removed a few years later. Identical to the one above the The Blue Legume, which is in fact two seperate sign due to length of the street name. A shame such old signs are removed rather than being restored

@mayorofhackney @hackneycouncil A shame such rare vintage street nameplates that have a historical significance and are a source of civic pride for some of us, are not restored. A few have been removed in recent years. I was told by the council they are destroyed once removed.
@GE0RGYGIRL I’ve also been toying with the idea of restoring them myself. Need a good scrub and a fresh coat of paint. This one in Blackstock Road, N4 was restored a few years ago. Looks great now.
Thanks to Google Street View’s Time Machine feature I was able to see when this vintage ‘Borough of Stoke Newington’ street sign in SN Road was repainted and restored in 2014. It’s great someone took the time and effort to bring it back to life.
My digital restoration of a rare street sign in Stoke Newington High St/Dynevor Rd, which includes the pre-1917 'N' postcode. The sign was clearly repainted at some point with the updated N16 postcode. There are only 2 surviving 'N' street signs in the former borough of SN.
@annazaani Yes. It was restored a few decades ago with quite a few of the original features like wooden panelling still there at the time.

@TimWThornton Looks like the 1896 Stoke Newington Parish boundary marker in Eade Road was spray painted black very recently. Poor and unnecessary restoration attempt? Is that the case? This is what it looked like a few weeks ago.

@mbarnesn16 It’s great to finally see for the first time the sign of the Rose & Crown in colour, as it’s completely discoloured now. I often wondered why the pub doesn’t restore it. Here’s the design of the sign, which includes the colour specification.
@realnickperry @manson_7 @hackneycouncil @jonburkeUK I’ve been in touch with one property owner who is very keen to have a similar sign on the building restored.

My digital restoration of a rare 'heritage' street sign in Stoke Newington High St/Dynevor Rd. The original layer had the pre-1917 'N' postal district and the 'new' N16 postal district was painted over it. Such signs weren't durable and this is the only one of its kind left in SN

Restored 1950s Summerhouse Road street sign in KAC Builders Merchants, 46 Stoke Newington Church St/Summerhouse Rd. The shop owner told me he asked if he could keep it when it was replaced a while ago. Summerhouse was a detached house, which stood where the street is now.
The FINAL! One is the only surviving Elizabethan church in London, restored and extended in 1563 by William Patten the Lord of the Manor. The other is the oldest surviving nondenominational funerary chapel (in the world I believe!). Which is your favourite SN historical building?
A discoloured late 1930s ‘Borough of Stoke Newington’ street sign in Green Lanes/Church St. Only 17 ‘Borough of Stoke Newington’ are still around (11 in this style). They were placed only along the borough boundaries. It can be restored easily. Hopefully one day.
1982 - Restored gate and railings, Abney Park Cemetery, Stoke Newington Church Street. The ornate iron gate dates back to 1700 and was originally the gate of Abney House, the manorial estate. It was blocked when the cemetery was in use.
Let the restoration begin! (Updating thread) Late 30s ‘Borough of Stoke Newington’ street sign. Only 11 in this style are still in place making this one the 12th surviving as far as I’m aware. They were placed only along the former borough’s boundaries. Best Xmas present ever!
