RT @VictorianLondon: Boundary marker for long lost Stoke Newington Borough 1901 (one day Stoke Newington will rise again!) http://t.co/YyDK…
SN Borough abolished in 1965 RT @urbanpastoral: Stoke Newington Borough boundary mark, 1901. Now in Islington, N5
@LynRennick curios to look at borough boundary maps of Stoke Newington and Hackney 1900-65. @ArchivesHackney can you help? Thanks.
1901 Stoke Newington borough boundary plaque opposite Leconfield Road marking south west border with Islington
1790 boundary stone in Clissold Park marking the border between the Parish of St. Mary Stoke Newington and Parish of South Hornsey
1822 boundary post - Hackney/Stoke Newington (via @HackneyMuseum)
1790 boundary stone in what became Clissold Park in 1889 marks the border between the parishes of St. Mary and South Hornsey.
@honor_rhodes The boundary marker between St Mary Stoke Newington and South Hornsey is by the bridge next to the Church St entrance

Stoke Newington Borough boundary marker 1901, King’s Crescent N4
Thanks @greenlanesn16 for pointing out there used to be a boundary marker on the old London and Provincial Bank building on Newington Green. The north end was within the boundaries of the Metropolitan Borough of Stoke Newington (1900-65).
Here are the 3 Stoke Newington Borough boundary markers which still exist that I'm aware of. Would love to know of any others, before embarking on a boundary marker-spotting walk.
A map I created showing the location of the 7 Stoke Newington Borough boundary markers I'm aware of. 6 of which are still in place. The one that was at Newington Green/Albion Road is no longer there. Reason unknown.
I was surprised to come across this St Mary Islington boundary marker on the Stoke Newington side of Petherton Road near Green Lanes earlier. The east side of the street from Leconfield Road was within the boundary of Stoke Newington.
@citymuso @lccmunicipal This one I’m guessing. It’s one of several borough boundary markers between Stoke Newington and Islington.
1887 South Hornsey parish boundary marker in Clissold Park. Half the park was in the parish of St Mary Stoke Newington. This made it very difficult to purchase it for the public. The Metropolitan Board of Works wouldn’t consider buying the SH half that was outside the metropolis
Green Lanes, Stoke Newington looking north. Leconfield Rd is on the left. A boundary marker below the sign for R. H. Rockwell & Co. Undertakers denotes that Leconfield Rd was the boundary between Stoke Newington and Islington. The north end of the road was in SN.
@ghostsigns @realnickperry spotted two pairs of Metropolitan Borough boundary markers in the same style as the ones along the Stoke Newington-Islington border. Ritchie Street/Liverpool Road and Pentonville Road/York Way.
@realnickperry @ghostsigns 1883 St Mary Islington boundary marker. All such wall-mounted boundary plaques I’ve spotted so far in London are of the same style.
Only spotted this unusual parish boundary marker a few days ago on the Stoke Newington side of Newington Green. Churchwardens J. J. Runtz and William Eve were the 1st and 2nd mayors respectively of the newly formed Metropolitan Borough of Stoke Newington. #LookUpLookDown
This St Mary Islington parish boundary marker in Green Lanes near Newington Green was brought to my attention a few days ago. It denotes the boundary between Islington (west side) and Stoke Newington (east side). The west side between Leconfield Rd and Petherton Rd was in SN.
Borough of Stoke Newington boundary marker from 1901 in Cobble Mews, King's Crescent near Mountgrove Road. The borough was absorbed into Hackney in 1965 along with Shoreditch.
The oldest surviving boundary marker in Stoke Newington is in Clissold Park opposite Clissold Road. It marks the border between the parishes of St Mary Stoke Newington and Hornsey. Probably placed when Jonathan Hoare built his estate in 1790, which later became Clissold Park.
Mashup: Petherton Rd looking north with Green Lanes Methodist church in the distance. The section on the right between Leconfield Rd and Green Lanes was within the boundaries of the former Borough of Stoke Newington. Old borough boundary marker is on Leconfield Rd/Petherton Rd.
@highamnews stumbled upon this 1816 boundary marker in Upper St opposite Cross St. Any idea what HH might mean?
@Huriye It was a school built in 1837. It stood derelict until a couple of years ago it was converted to flats. Don’t know about Prince George. Will check. The border was bottom of SN Road and Crossway. There are still two old borough boundary markers on the building in the corn…

@realnickperry @AlexTheGuiri @jessmorg_ @zviggityzvat There’s even a nice little boundary marker;)
@charlietabloid @Croslandite @realnickperry There’s still an old boundary marker there between Stoke Newington and Islington x.com/historyofstoke…
1876 St Mary Stoke Newington Parish boundary marker in Clissold Park behind the 393 bus stop. The name of churchwarden William Eve just about visible. He was the 2nd Mayor of Stoke Newington in 1902-3. His daughter Carrie Eve M.B.E., J.P. was Mayor of Stoke Newington in 1924-5.
Stoke Newington and South Hornsey Parish boundary markers from the 1870s-80s in Clissold Park behind the 393 bus stop in Church Street. The western part of the park was in South Hornsey till 1900 when Stoke Newington Borough was created and included parts of South Hornsey
Note the now-gone Stoke Newington Borough boundary marker from 1900 above the Boleyn Road street sign (@realnickperry). Six such boundary markers can still be found along the “southern border” of the former metropolitan borough of Stoke Newington. x.com/MIJ_LONDONer/s…
Other remnants of South Hornsey’s administrative past in the Stoke Newington area are Parish boundary markers in Clissold Park (behind the 393 bus stop next to Church St entrance, also in Green Lanes) and curb inlets with SHLB on them (South Hornsey Local Board). https://t.co/Jg…

@MiniMalta It’s an old parish boundary marker between St Mary Stoke Newington and South Hornsey. It’s the same year Jonathan Hoare developed his estate, which later became Clissold Park in 1889. I find it hard to believe it’s a coincidence.
This 'Borough of Stoke Newington' street sign in Blackstock Road N4 was restored a few years ago. Looks great now. Blackstock Road was the western boundary of the borough, which is why I hypothesise the borough name was included to act as a boundary marker.
An old St Mary Islington 1883 parish boundary marker (On the right) in Pethertone Road near Green Lanes marking the border between St Mary Islington and St Mary Stoke Newington. The east side of the street between Leconfield Road was in Stoke Newington parish and later borough.
@highamnews It’s an old (and listed) boundary marker between South Hornsey and Stoke Newington. It’s the year Johnathan Hoare had Clissold House (originally named Paradise House) so likely placed as a result of the site being developed I would imagine.
@JohnConstableRA @highamnews Boundary marker
Two Stoke Newington Borough boundary markers from 1901 at the junction of Blackstock Rd, N4 and Mountgrove Rd, N5. The Brownswood Park area, and a large area north of Newington Green were part of the South Hornsey Local Board. Absorbed into the newly formed SN Borough in 1900.
@rayroscoe1 Thanks! I surveyed all these SN Borough boundary markers
@realnickperry @highamnews @VictorianLondon 1863 St Mary Islington parish boundary marker in Dalston Kingsland Station (westbound platform). Can’t help thinking this wasn’t its original location unless that’s the year the line opened. Thoughts?
I was alerted today to an impressive 1887 South Hornsey parish boundary marker in Palatine Avenue. I stumbled upon a smaller one closer to SN Road on my way in. Parts of South Hornsey (north of Newington Green) were incorporated into the new Stoke Newington Borough in 1900.
@citymuso @urbanpastoral The one you are referring to was a 1901 Stoke Newington Borough boundary marker.
Spotted an Islington parish boundary marker (SMI - St Mary Islington) at 104 Riversdale Road, N5. Originally within the municipality of the South Hornsey Local Board, the Brownswood Park area was incorporated into the newly formed Metropolitan Borough of Stoke Newington in 1900.
Spotted this St Leonard Shoreditch Parish boundary marker yesterday in Kingsland Road. There’s a similar parish boundary marker, which is very easy to overlook, at 36 Newington Green. It marked the border between the parishes of St Mary Stoke Newington and St Mary Islington.
I’m baffled by this old boundary-marker like object in Clissold Park near the Green Lanes entrance that was brought to my attention today. Surviving writing is SN B(?) but the state and style suggest its too old to be from the period SN was a borough. Unless it’s P for parish?
@walk_hackney I would, but this one seems different. Unless it’s a manorial boundary marker???
@walk_hackney See here. I’m assuming BS stands for Boundary Stone, but nothing is marked in that area though the SN/Hornsey border is pretty much there.
@c_r_shaw Looks way too old to be a borough marker, there was no borough boundary in the park and this pillar-style (most of is buried in the ground now) is consistent with older boundary markers. That’s my take on it anyway.
@BringYourBaby Well... if BS is indeed Boundary Stone there was on in the lake :)
@BringYourBaby We should get a boat and look for a boundary stone on the island! :)
Barclays Bank, 40-41 Newington Green, Stoke Newington (Source: archive.barclays.com). Note the old Stoke Newington Borough boundary plaque below the 'Newington Green' street sign. It was sadly removed a few years ago. https://t.co/SnQmAagHRk
Three parish boundary markers in Clissold Park behind the 393 bus stop opposite Clissold Road. Two are of Stoke Newington Parish (1876) and one is of South Hornsey Parish (1859, 1887). Half the park was in South Hornsey.
Bentley Road in neighbouring Dalston, while small, offers a number of history gems: 1. What I think is a fire insurance mark - There are none in SN as far as I know 2. Street sign with pre-1917 N postcode - Only two in SN 3. Parish boundary markers - There are a few in SN
@DrHeadgear There are in that area 3 beatifuly preserved Stoke Newington Borough boundary markers from 1901 plus a number of ‘Stoke Newington Borough’ street signs. I can imagine some people find them very puzzling.
A long-gone parish boundary marker that was situated near Paradise Bridge in the park facing Church St is visible in this old photo of Paradise Row. There are four surviving parish boundaries of this style in Clissold Park. Group of 3 behind 393 bus stop by Clissold Rd entrance.
Parish boundary marker in Newington Green between the parishes of Stoke Newington and St Mary Islington. Very easy to miss.
1859 Hornsey Parish boundary marker in Clissold Park behind the 393 bus stop near Clissold Road. The western half of the land was within Hornsey Parish and the other in St Mary Stoke Newington.
Slight correction: The westernmost point of the former Borough of Stoke Newington was actually Blackstock Road/Seven Sisters Road. Sadly no borough boundary markers survived north of Blackstock Rd/Mountgrove Rd. x.com/HistoryOfStoke…
Very much looking forward to taking part in the filiming of @JoolzGuides’ short travel film in Stoke Newington tomorrow! youtube.com/joolzguides It’ll be great so sprinkle a bit of boundary marker and coalhole cover appreciation as well as historical anecdotes along the way.
@TimWThornton Looks like the 1896 Stoke Newington Parish boundary marker in Eade Road was spray painted black very recently. Poor and unnecessary restoration attempt? Is that the case? This is what it looked like a few weeks ago.
Note the long-gone Hornsey Parish boundary marker bottom right near Paradise Bridge, which is out of view. The western half of the park was within Hornsey Parish. It was incorporated into the newly formed Borough of Stoke Newington in 1900. There are 3 other markers like it stil…

@AlanGWardrop @EUtopean BP = Boundary Plate, Boundary Post maps.nls.uk/os/abbrev/b.ht…
Interesting to see the number of Boundary Stones (BS) that were once dotted along in the middle of Clissold Park in the 19th century when it was split between Hornsey Parish and Stoke Newington Parish.
Seeing in a late 19th century map just how many parish Boundary Posts/Plates (BP) were all over the place in Stoke Newington makes me appreciate even more the very few that have survivied and are still around.
Interestingly, there were no parish boundary posts/plates between Stoke Newington and Hackney, only along the boundaries with Hornsey and Islington. Perhaps because Stoke Newington and Hackney parishes were administered by the Hackney District Board of Works? @walk_hackney https…

I believe I located on a map this old Stoke Newington Boundary marker by the Green Lanes entrance not far from the lodge. It marked the boundary with the Parish of Hornsey. It’s marked on the map as B.P (Boundary Post/Plate). It’s very easy to miss.
1822 Boundary Post - Hackney Parish (HP) and Stoke Newington (SN). It is in the Hackney Museum.
…because you’ve always secretly wanted to play with an interactive 3D model of an old Stoke Newington Boundary Marker… x.com/artfletch/stat…

@artfletch @realnickperry @hancam14 Off the top of my head: 1. Lion grave monument in Abney Park 2. Commemorative fountain in Clissold Park 3. Clissold House 4. The Castle Pumping Station 5. SN Borough Boundary Markers 6. ‘Penfold’ post box
@abolishLH @FinsParkFriends I really enjoyed exploring Haringey streets a few months ago for the first time and spot all the street furniture relics from when it was Hornsey Parish and later the Borough of Hornsey. Also a number of St Mary Islington (SMI) parish boundary markers.
@realnickperry @highamnews have you seen one of these before? Came across it in North Millfields Recreation Ground in Clapton adjacent to Southwold Rd. boundary marker?
1876 Stoke Newington parish boundary marker in Clissold Park near the entrance opposite Clissold Road. It’s next to two Hornsey parish boundary markers. The west side of the estate that became the park in 1889 was within Hornsey Parish.
Very excited to discover that a Borough of Stoke Newington boundary marker from 1901 may still be on corner of Riversdale Rd/Mountgrove Rd. I checked in StreetView TimeMachine and it was still there in 2008. I was only aware of 7 surviving. N street sign makes it extra special!
Good news! I went over to look for the boundary marker, and while it’s impossible to see it now, the homeowner told me it’s still there. I’ll have to keep checking in the coming months. The odds of discovering a ‘new’ boundary marker are so slim. This is brilliant! https://t.co/…

@LynRennick @Middletonfox It’s a special boundary marker you can only see at a certain period of the year :)

Blink and you miss it: rare Stoke Newington Parish boundary post in Clissold Park. The western half of the park was within Hornsey Parish. Administered from 1865-1900 by the South Hornsey Local Board. Incorporated into the newly formed Borough of Stoke Newington in 1900.
1887 Hornsey Parish boundary marker in Clissold Park/Green Lanes. MThe western half of the park was within Hornsey Parish, the rest in SN Parish. Administered from 1865-1900 by the South Hornsey Local Board. Incorporated into the newly formed Borough of Stoke Newington in 1900.
1901 Borough of Stoke Newington boundary plaque in Petherton Road/Leconfield Road. One of only 8 surviving SN borough boundary plaques. They were dotted along the borough boundaries but were lost over the years due to housing developments, renovations and possibly WW2 bomb damage
1955 - Boundary of Hackney and Stoke Newington between 88 and 90 Amhurst Park. The street sign on the right has 'Borough of Hackney' and the one of the left 'Borough of Stoke Newington'. Possibly old parish boundary marker in the middle. (Source: hackney.soutron.net/Portal/Default…) https:/…

1883 St Mary Islington Parish boundary marker in Green Lanes near Newington Green. The east side from Newington Green to Hermitage Rd, N4 was within Stoke Newington Parish, as well as the west side between Leconfield Rd and Petherton Rd.
Walking past the Mildmay Club in Newington Green today I spotted the traces of a 1901 Borough of Stoke Newington boundary marker. These plaques were dotted along the former borough's boundaries and there are only 8 surviving today. Any idea when/why it was removed @mildmayclub?
1901 Borough of Stoke Newington boundary plaque in King’s Crescent/Mountgrove Rd. One of only 8 surviving SN borough boundary plaques. They were dotted along the borough boundaries but most were lost over the years due to housing developments, renovations and WW2 bomb damage.
Great to see I’m not the only person that ever uttered the sentence ‘My favourite Stoke Newington boundary marker’ :-) t.co/cK2qRvDV2U

A now gone Stoke Newington borough boundary marker from 1901 on the corner of Newington Green/Albion Road. It was sadly removed a few years ago when the former bank building was renovated. There are only 8 surviving Stoke Newington borough boundary markers.
Blink and you miss it: 1883 St Mary Islington parish boundary marker in Blackstock Rd (west side). The east side was in the Parish of Hornsey and incorporated into the newly formed Borough of Stoke Newington in 1900 as part of the Brownswood Park area.
Hackney is the only London borough to use lower-case letters for street names in its street signs.. and other interesting anecdotes about London's boroughs in great video by @jayforeman. I especially love the examples of borough boundary indicators
This time of the year offers a good opportunity to appreciate this group of three parish boundary markers in Clissold Park. Two Hornsey Parish boundary markers from 1859 and 1887 and a Stoke Newington Parish one from 1876. The west half of the park was originally in Hornsey.
@CaronLipman Boundary markers were marked in OS maps as B.P. (Boundary Post or Boundary Plaque) and there were LOADS of them around. Now only a handful. There are parts of SN that are gated developments now and where boundary markers may have survived. It’s on my list :)
1887 Hornsey Parish boundary marker in Palatine Avenue. Hornsey Parish had detached areas in south Stoke Newington, which were administered by an independent district (South Hornsey Local Board). It was incorporated into the newly formed Borough of Stoke Newington in 1900.
1887 Hornsey Parish boundary marker in Clissold Park/Green Lanes. The western half of the park was within Hornsey Parish, the rest in SN Parish. Administered from 1865-1900 by the South Hornsey Local Board. Incorporated into the newly formed Borough of Stoke Newington in 1900.
Rare 1896 Stoke Newington Parish boundary marker on the outskirts of the ancient parish, in Eade Road. Eade Road formed the northern border of the parish and later the Borough of Stoke Newington. Many of these were dotted along the parish’s borders. There are only 3 left today.
Spotted a second London County (boundary?) marker in North Millfields Recreation Ground in Clapton. Can anyone confirm its origin and purpose?
Blink and you miss it: SMI (St Mary Islington) parish boundary marker from 1883 in Riversdale Road near Clissold Park.
Managed to catch a glimpse of the 'Borough of Stoke Newington' 1901 boundary marker in Riversdale Rd/Mountgrove Rd. One of only 8 surviving boundary plaques. I only discovered it few months ago when going through old photos. It's very difficult to see it today through the foliage
